Dave Grohl Plays "All Apologies" With Gov't Mule During Secret Show: Watch

On Saturday night (December 8), Dave Grohl and an all-star band consisting of members from Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age and Jane's Addiction performed the Foo Fighters frontman's epic 23-minute-long instrumental track "Play" during Warren Haynes' 30th annual Christmas Jam in Asheville, North Carolina.

The musicians were supposed to catch a flight home the next morning, but Mother Nature had other plans. A snowstorm caused them to spend an extra night in town, so of course Grohl wanted to play a show. He and Haynes booked a gig at the Orange Peel, and once word got out a sea of people lined up outside the iconic rock venue in hopes to snag a ticket.

Grohl performed "Play" once again with his star-studded band, but the real highlight was a performance of Nirvana's "All Apologies" with Haynes and his band, Gov't Mule.

“Warren said, ‘Do you want to do ‘All Apologies’? That used to be thin ice and delicate ground for a long time, for good reason. That’s something that had to be handled gently,” Grohl told Rolling Stone after the show. “When he mentioned that song, my initial reaction was, ‘I can’t do that. I shouldn’t do that.’ But then I think about the people that the song means so much to and has been a part of their lives — that joy and love should be shared. And then, as we were playing it, the audience starts to sing along, and I’m crying my eyes out onstage trying to keep it together — what a beautiful moment. And who am I to keep people from that beautiful moment?”
